The Cerrado is the most biodiverse savanna on the planet and accounts for one third of Brazil's biodiversity. It is also the birthplace of the country's waters, as it houses the springs of eight of the 12 Brazilian watersheds. The biome plays an important role in terms of biodiversity and maintaining ecosystem services. But unfortunately the Cerrado's native vegetation is disappearing faster than any other in the world and 50% of the biome has already been converted for agricultural production.
Perhaps it is the first biome in the world that we can demonstrate this possibility of reconciling high-tech production activities and intensity, productivity generating wealth for the country, with the protected natural environments and the rights and culture of traditional peoples assured. WWF believes this is the time to show that this is possible and the Cerrado is the protagonist to make this possible.
